Chlorine leak in Dehradun leaves residents breathless

Residents of Jhajhra Tuesday complained of dizziness and breathing difficulties after chlorine gas engulfed the area. The gas spread after two of the six cylinders of chlorine that were kept in a vacant land started leaking. Authorities promptly evacuated the residents from the neighbourhood that falls under the jurisdiction of Prem Nagar police station in Dehradun and relocated them to a safer location. No casualty has been reported.

Soon after getting the information, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear (CBRN) teams reached the spot with detectors and rescue equipment.

The district police, fire service, NDRF, and the CBRN teams were at the spot. “Efforts are being made by everyone to stop the gas leak and remove the cylinders from the spot,” the SDRF statement read.

Dehradun Senior SP Ajay Singh said action is being taken to remove the cylinders from the spot. “A detailed investigation is being conducted to know why the cylinders were kept at the vacant land,” he said.

An FIR has been registered against the owner of the plot and its caretaker for endangering lives and personal safety of residents.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has instructed officials to effectively control the Prem Nagar incident. He has asked officials of the Industry and Labour Department to exercise special caution. The CM also asked officials to ensure that such incidents do not occur in the industrial areas of the state.
